<p>It’s been almost a year since I left my job to be a stay at home mom (SAHM), and the past 11 months have been full of laughs, snuggles, and plenty of life lessons. As I mentioned on my <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/from-work-to-home.html" target="_blank">“From Work to Home” post</a>, making the switch from working mom to SAHM was not easy. Up to that point, I had been living a fast-paced life, multi-tasking day and night with work and family, and, frankly, God had become just another item on my never-ending to-do list. I can now imagine how frustrating and saddening that must have been to God as He was trying to talk and instruct me, and I just wanted to get through the day. It’s like when I try to talk with my 4 year old while he’s watching his tablet. If I talk to him while he’s still using it, I get zero to minimal response. It’s not until I turn his tablet off that I can have his full attention and actually get to him. In a weird way, transitioning into SAHM life felt like a time where God allowed some circumstances to happen to “turn my tablet off” in order to have my full attention. Here are three of the lessons He's taught me during this time of transition.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">My Provision</h3>
<p>The first area that God talked to me about was our finances. One of the main reasons why I didn't come home any sooner was our need for my income, and it was scary saying goodbye to my salary. Well, I had not even had my last day at work when a few events started to hit our finances one by one. We had an unexpected (and huge!) hospital bill, car trouble, and a few other unforeseen expenses back to back. I was giving up my salary and this is what happens?! I was scared and frustrated, and I got very close to questioning my decision to leave my job.</p>

<p>You see, looking back I know that it was God showing me where I had placed my heart and sense of security. Over the years, as we had become accustomed to a comfortable lifestyle, I had traded God’s provision for what I could provide on my own. It was almost like I didn’t even need God for money anymore. When unexpected things happened, I looked at our bank accounts, not Him. All of these unexpected expenses made me finally stop so I could realize what I was doing and put my financial security back where it righteously belongs, on Him.</p>

<p>I’ll admit that the past year has been tight financially, as is expected after going to only one income, yet we have lacked nothing. God has faithfully provided for our family, and He continues to remind me that our provision comes from Him and not from anything we could ever do ourselves.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">My Identity</h3>
<p>When I left Honduras, I had the amazing opportunity to start over. During my time at college and nine years at my job, I had grown closer to the Nat I had been wanting to be. Even though I wasn’t there yet, I was continuously learning and growing, and I was loving it! A major flaw in my plan, however, was that I was putting all of my effort into developing my professional persona and I had gotten lazy in my personal life. The sweet and more outgoing person that everyone knew at work and social functions was not the same person that family and friends knew. After work hours, I was tired and it was easier to hide behind others’ shadows to just blend in.</p>

<p>I was proud of the Nat I was becoming at work, and leaving it to be my less impressive self 24/7 was painful. I remember processing all of these feelings when my mom was here for Christmas, and I had that tearful breakdown with her. She had taught me time and time again how my worth and identity should not be on things, people, or titles, but on Christ. I knew that in my head, yet I had wrongfully placed my identity on my professional persona, which felt like it was suddenly gone. Almost a year later, God continues to remind me that my worth is not based on what I do for a living or what others think of me, but should be anchored in Christ alone.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">My Future</h3>
<p>I am a planner and I have always had my eye on “the next thing” on my list. Leaving my job meant that the next items on my career plan were no longer valid, and I had no idea what was next. Whit and I agreed to try SAHM life for at least a few months, but beyond that I didn’t have a real plan.</p>

<p>That uncertainty was terrifying yet it forced me to start enjoying “the now” a lot more, instead of just planning the future. I began to invest intentionally not only in my family, but also in some of my [neglected] friendships. Having more free time, I reached out often and I was surprised how God was using me when a few of my friends were going through hard times. Like I mentioned on my <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/fresh-start.html" target="_blank">“Fresh Start” post</a>, God reminded me that my story matters. Not just for myself, but also to support and encourage others going through similar things. It gave me a sense of purpose again; something that I was missing while I was chasing the next item on my checklist.</p>

<p>To this day, I can’t tell you what will happen next year or when I’ll go back to work. I do know, however, that I am enjoying this time at home and I’m trusting God to guide and prepare me for whatever comes next.</p>

<p>These are just three of the major lessons during my transition into SAHM life, and I’m still not done learning them! Throughout this past year, I have seen God molding me and reminding me that my life is not my own. My family is not my own. My finances are not my own. My time is not my own. You get the idea. I had been living life for me and my ambitions, and that was about it. God had become another checklist or thing I did, instead of Him being the center of it all. If I could sum up the transition period into SAHM life it would be with Psalms 23:4. It was a time where I needed His “rod and staff” to not only discipline me but also comfort and guide me back to Him.</p>

<p>So no matter where you are today, I encourage you to slow down and examine where your heart is. Are you placing your provision, identity, and/or future on yourself or God?</p>

<p>Ha pasado casi un año desde que dejé mi trabajo para ser Mami en Casa (MEC), y los últimos 11 meses estuvieron llenos de risas, acurrucamientos y muchas lecciones de vida. Como mencioné en mi <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/from-work-to-home.html" target="_blank">post "Del Trabajo a la Casa"</a>, cambiar de mamá que trabaja a MEC no fue fácil. Hasta ese momento, había vivido una vida acelerada, haciendo multitareas día y noche con el trabajo y la familia, y, francamente, Dios se había convertido en simplemente otra cosa en mi interminable lista de cosas por hacer. Ahora puedo imaginar lo frustrante y triste que debe haber sido para Dios cuando estaba tratando de hablarme e instruirme, y yo sólo quería completar mi día. Es como cuando trato de hablar con mi hijo de 4 años mientras mira su tablet. Si hablo con él mientras todavía la está usando, casi no consigo ninguna respuesta. No es hasta que apago su tablet que puedo tener toda su atención y llegar a él. De una manera extraña, la transición a la vida de MEC fue como un tiempo en el que Dios permitió que ocurrieran algunas circunstancias para "apagar mi tablet" a fin de tener toda mi atención. Aquí están tres de las lecciones que me enseñó durante este tiempo de transición.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Mi Provisión</h3>
<p>La primera área de la que Dios me habló fue de nuestras finanzas. Una de las principales razones por las que no vine a casa más pronto fue nuestra necesidad de mi ingreso, y fue aterrador decirle adiós a mi salario. Bueno, ni siquiera había tenido mi último día en el trabajo cuando algunos eventos comenzaron a tocar nuestras finanzas uno por uno. Tuvimos una factura del hospital inesperada (¡y enorme!), problemas con el carro, y algunos otros gastos imprevistos. Estaba renunciando a mi salario, ¿y esto es lo que sucede? Estaba asustada y frustrada, y estuve muy cerca de cuestionar mi decisión de dejar mi trabajo.</p>

<p>Mirando hacia atrás, sé que fue Dios quien me estaba mostrando dónde había puesto mi corazón y mi sensación de seguridad. Con el paso de los años, al habernos acostumbrado a un estilo de vida cómodo, cambié la provisión de Dios por lo que podía proporcionar por mi cuenta. Era casi como si ya ni siquiera necesitase a Dios para el dinero. Cuando pasaban cosas inesperadas, miraba a nuestras cuentas bancarias, no a Él. Todos estos gastos inesperados me hicieron finalmente detenerme para poder darme cuenta de lo que estaba haciendo y volver a poner mi seguridad financiera en donde corresponde, en Él.</p>

<p>Admitiré que el año pasado ha sido ajustado financieramente, como se espera al tener un solo ingreso, sin embargo, no hemos necesitado de nada. Dios ha provisto fielmente a nuestra familia, y continúa recordándome que nuestra provisión proviene de Él y no de lo que podamos hacer nosotros mismos.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Mi Identidad</h3>
<p>Cuando salí de Honduras, tuve la increíble oportunidad de empezar de nuevo. Durante mi tiempo en la universidad y nueve años en mi trabajo, me había acercado más a la Nat que había querido ser. Aunque todavía no estaba donde quería, yo estaba aprendiendo y creciendo continuamente, ¡y me encantaba! Sin embargo, una falla importante en mi plan era que estaba poniendo todo mi empeño en desarrollar mi persona profesional y me había vuelto perezosa en mi vida personal. La persona dulce y más extrovertida que todos conocían en el trabajo y las funciones sociales no era la misma persona que mi familia y amigos conocían. Después de las horas de trabajo, estaba cansada y era más fácil esconderme detrás de las sombras de los demás para mezclarme con el resto.</p>

<p>Estaba orgullosa de la Nat que me estaba convirtiendo en el trabajo, y dejarla por mi yo menos impresionante 24/7 fue doloroso. Recuerdo haber procesado todos estos sentimientos cuando mi Mami estaba aquí para Navidad, y tuve ese momento que exploté en llanto con ella. Ella me había enseñado una y otra vez cómo mi valor e identidad no deberían estar en cosas, personas, o títulos, sino en Cristo. Lo sabía en mi cabeza, pero había colocado erróneamente mi identidad en mi persona profesional, la cual parecía haber desaparecido de repente. Casi un año después, Dios continúa recordándome que mi valor no se basa en mi profesión ni en lo que otros piensan de mí, sino que debe estar anclado sólo en Cristo.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Mi Futuro</h3>
<p>Soy alguien que le gusta planear las cosas y siempre he estado enfocada en "lo que sigue" en mi lista. Dejar mi trabajo significó que los próximas cosas en mi plan de carrera ya no eran válidas, y yo no tenía idea de lo que vendría después. Whit y yo acordamos probar la vida de MEC durante al menos unos meses, pero más allá de eso no tenía un plan de verdad.</p>

<p>Esa incertidumbre era aterradora, pero me forzó a comenzar a disfrutar "el ahora" mucho más, en lugar de simplemente planificar el futuro. Comencé a invertir intencionalmente no sólo en mi familia, sino también en algunas de mis amistades [que había descuidado]. Al tener más tiempo libre, me comunicaba con ellas con frecuencia y me sorprendió la forma en que Dios me estaba utilizando cuando algunas de mis amigas estaban pasando por momentos difíciles. Como mencioné en mi post <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/fresh-start.html" target="_blank">"Un Nuevo Comienzo"</a>, Dios me recordó que mi historia es importante. No sólo para mí, sino también para apoyar y alentar a otros que pasan por cosas similares. Me dio una sensación de propósito de nuevo; algo que había perdido mientras estaba persiguiendo lo que seguía en mi lista de cosas por hacer.</p>

<p>Hasta el día de hoy, no puedo decirte lo que sucederá el próximo año o cuándo volveré a trabajar. Sin embargo, sé que estoy disfrutando este momento en casa y estoy confiando en que Dios me guiará y preparará para lo que venga después.</p>

<p>Estas son sólo tres de las principales lecciones durante mi transición a la vida de MEC, ¡y todavía no he terminado con ellas! A lo largo de este año pasado, he visto a Dios moldearme y recordarme que mi vida no es mía. Mi familia no es mía. Mis finanzas no son mías. Mi tiempo no es mío. Entiendes la idea. Había estado viviendo la vida para mí y mis ambiciones, y eso era todo. Dios se había convertido en otra cosa en mi lista o algo que yo hacía, en lugar de ser el centro de todo. Si pudiera resumir el período de transición en la vida de MEC sería con Salmos 23:4. Ha sido un tiempo en el que necesitaba su "vara y cayado" no sólo para disciplinarme sino también para consolarme y guiarme de regreso a Él.</p>

<p>Así que no importa dónde estés hoy, te animo a que pares por un momento y examines dónde está tu corazón. ¿Estás poniendo tu provisión, tu identidad y/o tu futuro en ti mismo(a) o en Dios?</p>

<p>On last week’s post <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/from-work-to-home.html?nptest=1" target="_blank" title="From Work to Home post">"From Work to Home"</a>, I shared about my tough decision to leave my job and be a stay at home mom (SAHM). Confused and torn between both choices, I really just wanted a 1-2-3 step method or an if-then statement (showing my nerd side) to help me decide! Knowing such a thing didn't exist, unfortunately, here are some of the things I did instead:</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Seek God's Guidance</h3>
<p>First and foremost, I wanted to make the right decision according to God’s good and perfect will for my life. I didn’t want the easy out and just “duct tape” the issue temporarily. I truly wanted to make the best, future-proof choice. Knowing that you don’t always receive an instant answer, like a God-sized vending machine, I did the following things to prepare my heart.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Prayer</h4>
<p>I prayed constantly and for different things. First for <span class="highlight seafoam">repentance</span> since I knew I wasn’t fully living a righteous life, just doing the bare minimum to make it through the day. I also <span class="highlight seafoam">thanked Him</span> for everything he had done in my life until that point. And, of course, I asked for his <span class="highlight seafoam">guidance</span> to make such a tough decision. I asked for direction (to know what to do), confirmation (peace with my decision), and provision (financial/emotional/spiritual/etc. support through it all).</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Scripture</h4>
<p>I started reading the Bible daily (like I should have been doing all along!). Among other scriptures, I remember reading verses about God’s guidance like <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/111/EXO.23.20" target="_blank" title="Exodus 23:20">Exodus 23:20</a> (a favorite since when I was deciding to leave Honduras!) and <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/111/PSA.32.8" target="_blank" title="Psalms 32:8">Psalms 32:8</a>. I read a lot of Psalms and Proverbs, my favorite go-to’s, and tried to meditate on his Word throughout my day. I also read devotionals on the <a href="https://www.bible.com/app" target="_blank" title="Bible mobile app">Bible mobile app</a> on my phone.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Music</h4>
<p>I listened to a lot of music, as usual, and I particularly listened to Hillsong United’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViRb_fyFZtY&list=PL3deMd8-p5lfCqdPlXJJ_pNvzBkSfH4ni" target="_blank" title="“Of Dirt and Grace” album on YouTube">“Of Dirt and Grace” album</a> on repeat. The song <a href="https://youtu.be/3AQ6VVFNjNQ" target="_blank" title="“Captain” on YouTube">“Captain”</a> was a major one as I asked God to guide my life and lead me where he wanted me to go.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Fasting</h4>
<p>I had not fasted in a while, but I decided to fast since I was serious about having a contrite heart and humbling myself before God. I wanted to give up things that were close to my heart, so I abstained from food and social media during my fast.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Seek Counsel from Family and Friends</h3>
<p>Being the private person that I usually am, I relied on the support of only a few but close family members and friends. Their advice, encouragement, and prayers made a huge difference when I felt confused and unsure.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Answer Some Difficult Questions</h3>
<p>As I looked for God’s guidance, I had to ask myself the following questions (among the many, many other questions that popped up in my head!):</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">New Job or SAHM?</h4>
<p>I had to really ask myself, “did I want to be with the kiddos all day or was I just ready for a new phase in my career?” I went back and forth on this one for some time, actually. In the end though, Whit, who had seen my longing to be with the kiddos for years, reminded me: “right now you won’t really be happy anywhere that is not with the kids.” So that answered that question!</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Is it Financially Viable?</h4>
<p>Some of the most important questions were about our finances since $ had been a showstopper up to this point in time. Could we make it work without my salary? Could we afford health insurance? And more questions along those lines. We drafted potential budgets back and forth, guesstimating what the new numbers would look like. Sometimes it seemed impossible, yet after several attempts (and cutting a lot of expenses!) we were able to come up with a tight but doable budget. We also decided to pay off our car payment so we would only have our mortgage as debt. That helped a lot!</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">Is my Husband on the Same Page?</h4>
<p>If I was going to make the jump into SAHM life, I had to make sure that Whit was on agreement. Leaving my job was not only going to affect me, but it would greatly impact Whit and our family. I know he wasn’t 100% on board at the time since we had gotten used to our comfortable lifestyle, but he supported and encouraged me to make the jump!</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">The Aftermath</h3>
<p>So after a lot of searching and weighing my options, God started to align things and provide more clarity on which decision to make. Even then I was still very nervous to give my boss my notice; I was literally shaking! Her response, along with the one from leadership and coworkers, provided even more confirmation. I never got a “why?” or “are you crazy?” response. Instead, I received the support I needed to leave in good terms and with peace of mind! I even got a few “I'm jealous of you” from a few fellow moms!</p>

<p>While there's no easy yes/no method to decide between working mom life or SAHM life that works for everyone, I hope this gives you a snapshot of what helped me to make this important decision. And even though it hasn't always been easy, I'm so thankful for God's guidance, confirmation, and provision through such a rewarding time in my life!</p>

<p>En el post de la semana pasada <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/from-work-to-home.html?nptest=1" target="_blank" title="Del Trabajo a la Casa post">"Del Trabajo a la Casa"</a>, compartí acerca de mi decisión de dejar mi trabajo y ser un Mami en Casa (MEC). Confundida y dividida entre ambas opciones, ¡realmente sólo quería un método de pasos 1-2-3 o una declaración si-entonces (mostrando mi lado nerd) para ayudarme a decidir! Sabiendo que tal cosa no existía desafortunadamente, aquí están algunas de las cosas que empecé a hacer:</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">BUSCAR LA DIRECCIÓN DE DIOS</h3>
<p>En primer lugar, quería tomar la decisión correcta de acuerdo a la buena y perfecta voluntad de Dios para mi vida. No quería una salida fácil y simplemente poner “cinta adhesiva” temporalmente sobre el problema. Realmente quería hacer la mejor elección. Sabiendo que no siempre se recibe una respuesta inmediata, como si fuera una máquina de ventas tamaño Dios, hice las siguientes cosas para preparar mi corazón.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">ORACIÓN</h4>
<p>Oré constantemente y por diferentes cosas. Primero por <span class="highlight seafoam">arrepentimiento</span>, ya que sabía que no estaba viviendo una vida completamente justa, simplemente haciendo lo mínimo para atravesar el día. También le <span class="highlight seafoam">di gracias</span> por todo lo que había hecho en mi vida hasta ese momento. Y, por supuesto, le pedí su <span class="highlight seafoam">guianza</span> para tomar una decisión tan difícil. Pedí dirección (saber qué hacer), confirmación (paz con mi decisión), y provisión (apoyo financiero / emocional / espiritual / etc, a través de todo).</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">SAGRADA ESCRITURA</h4>
<p>Comencé a leer la Biblia diariamente (¡como lo debería haber estado haciendo todo el tiempo!). Entre otras escrituras, recuerdo haber leído versos acerca de la guía de Dios como <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/149/EXO.23.20" target="_blank" title="Éxodo 23:20">Éxodo 23:20</a> (¡un favorito desde cuando decidí dejar Honduras!) Y <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/149/PSA.32.8" target="_blank" title="Salmos 32:8">Salmos 32:8</a>. Leí muchos Salmos y Proverbios, mis favoritos, y traté de meditar en su Palabra a lo largo de mi día. También leí devocionales en la <a href="https://www.bible.com/app" target="_blank" title="Baplicación móvil de la Biblia">aplicación móvil de la Biblia</a> en mi teléfono.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">MÚSICA</h4>
<p>Escuché mucha música, como de costumbre, y en particular escuché el álbum de Hillsong United <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViRb_fyFZtY&list=PL3deMd8-p5lfCqdPlXJJ_pNvzBkSfH4ni" target="_blank" title="“Of Dirt and Grace” album en YouTube">“Of Dirt and Grace”</a> en repetición. La canción <a href="https://youtu.be/3AQ6VVFNjNQ" target="_blank" title="“Captain” on YouTube">“Captain”</a> fue una de las principales al pedirle a Dios que guiara mi vida y me llevara donde él quería que yo fuera.</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">AYUNO</h4>
<p>No había ayunado desde hace en un tiempo, pero decidí hacerlo porque de verdad quería tener un corazón contrito y humillarme delante de Dios. Quería dejar cosas que estaban cerca a mi corazón, así que me abstuve de alguna comida y las redes sociales durante mi ayuno.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">BUSCAR EL CONSEJO DE FAMILIA Y AMIGOS</h3>
<p>Siendo la persona privada que soy normalmente, confié en el apoyo de sólo unos cuantos familiares y amigos cercanos. Sus consejos, aliento, y oraciones hicieron una gran diferencia cuando me sentía confundida e insegura.</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">RESPONDER ALGUNAS PREGUNTAS DIFÍCILES</h3>
<p>Mientras buscaba la guía de Dios, tuve que hacerme las siguientes preguntas (¡entre las muchas, muchas otras preguntas que surgieron en mi cabeza!):</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">TRABAJO NUEVO O MEC?</h4>
<p>Tuve que realmente preguntarme a mí misma, "¿Quería estar con los niños todo el día o solo estaba lista para una nueva fase en mi carrera?" En realidad, estuve indecisa sobre esto por algún tiempo. Sin embargo, al final de todo, Whit, que había visto mi anhelo de estar con mis hijos durante años, me recordó: "en este momento no serás feliz en ningún lugar que no estés con los niños". ¡Eso respondió esta pregunta!</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">¿ES FINANCIERAMENTE VIABLE?</h4>
<p>Algunas de las preguntas más importantes fueron acerca de nuestras finanzas ya que el $ había sido un espectáculo hasta este momento. ¿Podríamos hacerlo funcionar sin mi sueldo? ¿Podríamos pagar el seguro médico? Y más preguntas parecidas. Hicimos bastantes presupuestos potenciales, estimando cómo se verían los nuevos números. A veces parecía imposible, pero después de varios intentos (¡y de cortar un montón de gastos!) pudimos llegar a un presupuesto bien ajustado pero posible. También decidimos pagar nuestro préstamo de carro para tener solamente nuestra hipoteca como deuda. ¡Eso ayudó mucho!</p>

<h4 class="post-sub-title txt-left">¿ESTÁ MI ESPOSO EN ACUERDO?</h4>
<p>Si iba a hacer el salto a la vida de MEC, tenía que asegurarme de que Whit también estuviera de acuerdo. Dejar mi trabajo no sólo iba a afectarme a mí, sino que también impactaría mucho a Whit y nuestra familia. Sé que él no estaba 100% a bordo en ese momento ya que nos habíamos acostumbrado a nuestro estilo de vida cómodo, ¡pero él me apoyó y me animó a hacer el salto!</p>

<h3 class="post-sub-title txt-left">EL RESULTADO</h3>
<p>Así que después de buscar y pesar mis opciones, Dios comenzó a alinear varias cosas y darme más claridad sobre qué decisión tomar. Aun así, estaba muy nerviosa de darle mi aviso a mi jefe; ¡estaba literalmente temblando! Su respuesta, junto con la del liderazgo y compañeros de trabajo, proporcionó aún más confirmación. Nunca recibí una respuesta de "¿por qué?" o "¿estás loca?". En su lugar, recibí el apoyo que necesitaba para salir en buenos términos y con paz en mi mente! ¡Incluso recibí unos cuantos "estoy celosa de ti" de unas Mamis!</p>

<p>Aunque no hay un método fácil de sí / no para decidir entre la vida de mamá que trabaja o la vida de MEC que funciona para todos, espero que esto les dé una idea de lo que me ayudó a tomar esta decisión importante. Y aunque no siempre ha sido fácil, estoy muy agradecido por la guía, confirmación, y provisión de Dios durante un tiempo tan gratificante en mi vida.</p>

  <p>Early February this year, Whit and I went out of town for his staff retreat. We rode in a completely-packed SUV, and due to space constraints I sat in the very back row, pretty much surrounded by luggage. Since I could barely hear what everyone was talking about and I had zero cellphone service, I decided to write what had been on my mind for a couple of months now. I put on my headphones, listened to music, and started writing away on my iPad. It was that particular car ride that reignited my passion for writing and for sharing with you about my transition from working mom to stay at home mom (SAHM). Many drafts and months later since that car ride, here it goes:</p>
  <p>Ever since I can remember, I've had big dreams of excelling at my education and professional career. Getting married and having kids were on my life checklist, sure, but coming from a "macho" culture and seeing so many women be housewives (treated like servants at times!), I knew that's not what I wanted for myself. With this and many more expectations, I left Honduras at the age of 18 to a brand new place all by myself <i>(more on this for another time)</i>.</p>
  
  <p>A Computer Science undergrad degree and 9 years of working at the same company later, I thought I was on the right track. To say that this job shaped a big chunk of my life is an understatement. I was truly invested and grateful from a career, personal, and even immigration perspective. That feeling of commitment (along with my personal sense of drive!) pushed me to grow and advance in my career, but it also made balancing home and work life incredibly challenging. I found myself already checking many of my before-leaving-Honduras goals, yet suddenly two little kiddos changed everything. Right after having <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2013/08/meet-coen.html" target="_blank" title="Meet Coen">Coen</a>, I started to long, yes not just lightly want, but to long to be with him all the time. Some days were easy and I loved my job, yet some days I just wanted to cry and put in my notice! Having <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/meet-adilyn.html" target="_blank" title="Meet Adilyn">Adi</a> a couple of years later made it even harder to juggle being a [perfect] wife, mom, and full-time employee; it felt impossible at times. I was constantly torn between my career and my family, becoming harder and harder to bear. I was feeling confused, exhausted, and like I was failing in all areas of my life.</p>
  
  <p>It was then, at my worst, where I found the breakthrough I needed so bad. I began to pray and seek God with everything I had, probably for the first time in a really long time. Sure, I was a Christian, went to church, my husband was even on staff at a church, but the busyness of life meant that I had forgotten that being a Christian requires a constant consecration and putting God first before everything ALL the time. Feeling torn over what my heart wanted, I asked him to give me clarity and I prayed <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/111/PSA.37.4" target="_blank" title="Psalms 37:4 (NIV)">Psalms 37:4</a> over my life: <span class="highlight seafoam">"Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart"</span>. The more I sought Him, the more things started to shift around me. I still remember having this particular conversation over lunch with a friend and mentor from work. She knew I had been struggling with work/life balance, and she was telling me about her story and her family. She told how she had to ask herself "what does success mean for me and my family?". With her being high in leadership, I expected something along the lines of continuing moving up the chain while making sure her family was doing well. Her answer, however, was just what I needed to hear. She told me how for her success meant raising her kids to be good people who did good in this world (I'm paraphrasing, of course). If she had asked me that same question, I would've rambled about career stuff (as I had my eye on moving from manager to director, and so on) and something about my family too. This conversation made me rethink a few things to say the least. The weeks and months after that lunch changed everything. Whit was up for a promotion, making it possible for me to leave my job and come home. It wasn't going to be easy or pretty, but it was the first time since we got married that it was even a possibility. Soon after that, things started to fall into place and I wanted to come home more and more. After much consideration and counsel, I put in my notice at work and made things official.</p>
  
  <p>My last day at my job was right before Thanksgiving, and the first month or two at home were not easy; for anyone. The emotional and mental toll it took on Whit and I was bigger than anticipated. Sometime around Christmas, I finally had a breakdown. My parents were in town for the holidays, and my mom kept wanting to talk about how I was doing. The more she asked, the more I thought about it, and one day I exploded in full ugly cry breakdown with her. I was still torn over leaving my career to be a SAHM. I felt like everyone else was more excited for me than I was. I went through a full range of emotions, including anger. It was not pretty, but that conversation with my mom was crucial. Leaving my job was beyond deciding to spend time with my kiddos. It was a conscious decision to follow God's will for my life at that point in time. How ironic that after so many years of strongly disliking the idea of being at home, God then puts this giant pull on my heart to desire that exact same thing. What a humbling and heartbreaking thing for me to accept! Staying home with the kiddos may be what some ladies have always dreamed of, yet it took everything in me to trust God and actually do it.</p>
  
  <p>Praying Psalms 37:4 for my life didn't mean that God would magically give me what I wanted (like I wished at times), but it meant that He would give me His desires, even if they were completely opposite to what I selfishly wanted. Pausing my career and leaving the financial security we had was one of the hardest things I have done, and it's just the beginning of a journey of God molding and aligning me back to him. To his forgiveness. To his provision. To his grace and mercy. To his strength. To Himself. I know I'll fall and I'll get scared at times. I know my kids will frustrate me and drive me crazy some days. I know I'll miss having the extra money as well. I also know that following God's perfect will and timing is above all of those feelings and desires, no matter how hard it may be.</p>

<p>A principios de Febrero de este año, Whit y yo fuimos fuera de la ciudad para un retiro de su trabajo. Nos fuimos en un carro SUV completamente lleno, y debido a las limitaciones de espacio me senté en la fila de atrás, casi rodeada de equipaje. Dado que apenas podía oír lo que todo el mundo hablaba y no tenía servicio celular, decidí escribir lo que había estado en mi mente durante un par de meses. Me puse mis audífonos, escuché música, y empecé a escribir en mi iPad. Este viaje en particular fue lo que reavivó mi pasión por escribir y por compartirles sobre mi transición de ser mamá que trabaja a estar en casa. Después de muchos intentos y meses desde ese viaje, aquí va:</p>
  
  <p>Desde que puedo recordar, he tenido grandes sueños de sobresalir en mi educación y carrera profesional. Casarme y tener hijos estaban en mi lista de vida, por supuesto, pero viniendo de una cultura machista y viendo a tantas mujeres ser amas de casa (¡tratadas como criadas a veces!), sabía que eso no era lo que yo quería para mí. Con ésta y muchas más expectativas, salí de Honduras a la edad de 18 años hacia un lugar completamente nuevo <i>(más sobre ésto en otro momento)</i>.</p>
  
  <p>Un título de posgrado en Computación y 9 años de trabajar en la misma empresa más tarde, pensé que estaba en el camino correcto. Decirles que este trabajo formó un gran pedazo de mi vida no sería suficiente. Yo estaba verdaderamente invertida y agradecida desde una perspectiva profesional, personal, e incluso inmigratoria. Ese sentimiento de compromiso (¡junto con mi sentido personal de salir adelante!) me empujó a crecer y avanzar en mi carrera, pero también hizo que fuera increíblemente difícil equilibrar la vida del hogar y la laboral. Me encontré alcanzando muchas de las metas con que salí de Honduras, pero de repente dos pequeños niños lo cambiaron todo. Justo después de tener <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2013/08/meet-coen.html" target="_blank" title="Conozcan a Coen">Coen</a>, empecé a ansiar, sí no sólo querer a la ligera, sino ansiar estar con él todo el tiempo. Algunos días eran fáciles y me encantaba mi trabajo, ¡pero algunos días sólo quería llorar y poner en mi renuncia! El tener a <a href="http://www.natinlove.com/2017/09/meet-adilyn.html" target="_blank" title="Conozcan a Adi">Adi</a> un par de años más tarde hizo aún más difícil poder equilibrar ser una esposa, mamá, y empleada a tiempo completo [perfecta]; lo sentía imposible a veces. Estaba constantemente dividida entre mi carrera y mi familia, cada vez más difícil de soportar. Me sentía confundida, agotada, y como si estuviera fallando en todas las áreas de mi vida.</p>
  
  <p>Fue entonces, en mi peor momento, donde encontré la respuesta que tanto necesitaba. Comencé a orar y buscar a Dios con todo lo que tenía, probablemente por primera vez en mucho tiempo. Claro, era cristiana, iba a la iglesia, mi esposo incluso trabajaba en una iglesia, pero estar tan ocupada de la vida había hecho que me olvidara que ser cristiano requiere una consagración constante y poner a Dios por primero TODO el tiempo. Sintiéndome dividida por lo que quería mi corazón, le pedí a Dios que me diera claridad y oré el <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/149/PSA.37.4" target="_blank" title="Salmos 37: 4">Salmos 37:4</a> sobre mi vida: <span class="highlight seafoam">"Deléitate asimismo en Jehová, y él te concederá las peticiones de tu corazón"</span>. Cuanto más lo buscaba, las cosas empezaban a cambiar más a mi alrededor. Todavía recuerdo tener una conversación durante un almuerzo con una amiga y mentora del trabajo. Ella sabía que yo había estado luchando con el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la familia, y me estaba contando acerca de su historia y su familia. Ella me contó cómo un día tuvo que preguntarse "¿qué significa el éxito para mí y mi familia?". Con su alto nivel de liderazgo en la empresa, yo esperaba algo a lo largo de las líneas de seguir subiendo en su carrera mientras se aseguraba de que su familia estuviera bien. Su respuesta, sin embargo, era justo lo que necesitaba oír. Ella me dijo que para ella el éxito significaba criar a sus hijos para que fueran buenas personas que hicieron el bien en este mundo (estoy parafraseando, por supuesto). Si me hubiera hecho la misma pregunta, yo hubiera divagado sobre mi carrera (ya que yo tenía mi ojo en pasar de gerente a directora, y así sucesivamente) y algo sobre mi familia también. Esta conversación me hizo pensar algunas cosas de nuevo, por decir lo menos. Las semanas y los meses después de ese almuerzo lo cambiaron todo. A Whit le dieron una promoción, lo que me permitiría dejar mi trabajo y quedarme en casa. No iba a ser fácil o bonito, pero era la primera vez desde que nos casamos que era incluso una posibilidad. Pronto después de eso, las cosas comenzaron a caer en su lugar y yo quería estar en casa más y más. Después de mucha consideración y consejo, puse mi aviso en el trabajo e hice el cambio oficialmente.</p>
  
  <p>Mi último día en mi trabajo fue justo antes del Día de Acción de Gracias, y los primeros dos meses en casa no fueron nada fáciles; para nadie. La carga emocional y mental que cayó sobre Whit y yo fue más grande de lo previsto. En un tiempo cerca de Navidad, finalmente tuve un colapso emocional. Mis padres estaban de visita, y mi Mami continuaba queriendo hablar de cómo estaba yo con todo el cambio. Cuanto más me preguntaba, más pensaba yo en ello, y un día estallé en llanto total con ella. Todavía me sentía dividida al dejar mi carrera para ser un ama de casa. Sentía como que todo el mundo estaba más emocionado por mí que yo misma. Pasé por una gama completa de emociones, incluyendo enojo. No fue bonito, pero esa conversación con mi Mami fue crucial. Dejar mi trabajo fue más allá de decidir pasar tiempo con mis hijos. Fue una decisión consciente de seguir la voluntad de Dios en ese momento para mi vida. Qué irónico que después de tantos años de desagradarme tan fuerte la idea de estar en casa, Dios entonces pone este gigante tirón en mi corazón para desear eso misma. ¡Qué cosa tan humillante y desgarradora para mí! Estar en casa con sus hijos es lo que algunas mujeres siempre han soñado, pero tomó todo en mí para confiar en Dios y realmente hacerlo.</p>
  
  <p>Orar el Salmos 37:4 para mi vida no significaba que Dios mágicamente me daría lo que yo quería (como deseaba a veces), pero significaba que Él me daría su deseos, aunque fueran completamente opuestos a lo que yo quería egoístamente. Pausar mi carrera y dejar la seguridad financiera que teníamos fue una de las cosas más difíciles que he hecho, y es sólo el comienzo de un viaje de Dios moldeándome y alineándome de nuevo. A su perdón. A su provisión. A su gracia y misericordia. A su fuerza. A Él mismo. Sé que a veces voy a caer y voy a tener miedo. Sé que algunos días mis hijos me frustrarán y me volverán loca. Sé que también extrañaré tener dinero extra. Pero también sé que seguir la voluntad y el tiempo perfecto de Dios está por encima de todos esos sentimientos y deseos, no importa lo duro que sea.</p>
