Choose Love

(Escoge el Amor)

Car rides to and from school with the kiddos usually involve the following: 1) music from whatever movie the kiddos are currently into and 2) reminding Coen to make good decisions that day. We talk a lot about learning to love God and to love [all] people, which both Coen and I need help with. You see, loving people is not the easiest thing for me. It's not my first reaction to most life situations; not even close. However, the more I search God, the more I want to be like Him and love like He does. Over the past year or so, I’ve truly been asking Him to help me soften my heart since it’s hardened over time.

Last Thursday, October 5th, was “National Do Something Nice Day” so I asked Coen to go out of his way to show love that day. I also posted on my Instagram story and Facebook page about it, which you may have seen. The caption on the photo read, “Today, and every day after, choose love”. Simple, but with everything happening around the world from tragedies to natural disasters, it felt appropriate. I didn’t know, however, that God would use that post to test my heart. That same day, maybe a couple of hours after posting it, something happened that I usually react to with anger and annoyance. And right as I was about to react [with anything but love], I felt like a nudge from God saying “You say to ‘Choose LOVE’, huh? Do you actually mean it or do you just want others to think you do?” Wow. Tough but true!

It’s easy to talk and post about love, but the true test happens when nobody's watching. So today I challenge you to choose love; not just with your words or outside appearance (including social media), but with everything you do. If you don’t know how to love people, pray that God to teaches you how and I promise you He will show you (and give you plenty of growth opportunities along the way)!

Do you have any recent experiences where your willingness to love was tested?

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these.

Mark 12:30-31

S. Marcos 12:30-31
